The Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest (Greek: Μουσείο Φυσικής Ιστορίας Απολιθωμένου Δάσους Λέσβου) is a geological museum located in the village of Sigri on the island of Lesbos in Greece. Established in 1994, it is a center for the study, management, and preservation of the petrified forest of Lesbos and for public education about the site. It is a founding member of the European Geoparks Network and is a member of UNESCO's Global Geoparks Network.
In the educational program ‘’Lesvos Geopark: The Island of nature and culture’’, the children discover the geological, natural, cultural and archaeological monuments of Lesvos during their tour in the island of Lesvos. They experience unique tasting experiences of traditional products and travel mentally millions of years back to the geological past of the Aegean and the Greek region, when Greece was part of a large ocean, the Ocean of Tethys. Over time, the Ocean of Tethys was destroyed, rocks fell or emerged from the dark bottoms of the Ocean. New mountains rose where the ocean once stood. The geological processes continued the change of the relief and created the geosites that we find today all over the island of Lesvos.
The children discover the most important geosites of Lesvos, their characteristics, the geological phenomenon connected to their creation, their history and their importance for the evolution of the Aegean Sea and the Greek region. They gather information in the open air about the rocks, the geological structures, the geosites of Lesvos and record their observations about the processes and phenomena that have contributed to the creation of the current landscapes of Lesvos as well as their relationship with the natural, cultural and archeological monuments of Lesvos. They submit their proposals for their utilization, protection and promotion based on the principles of sustainability.
