The Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest (Greek: Μουσείο Φυσικής Ιστορίας Απολιθωμένου Δάσους Λέσβου) is a geological museum located in the village of Sigri on the island of Lesbos in Greece. Established in 1994, it is a center for the study, management, and preservation of the petrified forest of Lesbos and for public education about the site. It is a founding member of the European Geoparks Network and is a member of UNESCO's Global Geoparks Network.
Did you know that the first marine fossil park in Greece is located in Nissiopi, the islet located opposite the settlement of Sigri in the island of Lesvos?
The islet is one of the richest areas in fossils at the Petrified Forest. There, the Museum of Natural History of the Lesvos Petrified Forest has created a marine park, which the public can visit by the special boat with a glass bottom “NISSIOPI”.
Nissiopi is a unique area as the fossil ecosystem with the petrified tree trunks coexists with the present-day ecosystem with rich flora and fauna.
Hundreds of fossilized tree trunks, standing or lying, have been discovered during the research and the excavations of the Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest through almost the entire area of the island and in the marine area around Nissiopi.
In Nissiopi visitors can also admire impressive coastal landscapes and geosites, like tafoni, arches and vertical cliffs, the results of the great geological changes that formed the Aegean Sea. 20 million years ago the marine area around the Nissiopi Islet used to be land, part of a huge subtropical forest. Large faults and catastrophic earthquakes resulted in the separation of the islet from the rest of Lesvos and the creation of the Aegean Sea as well.
