With great turnouts on our organized exploration to the marine park of the petrified forest of Nissiopi last Saturday and Sunday 16th and 17th July, we are pleased and excited to organize more trips for those who are interested! The trips take place with a special ship that has glass flooring, allowing visitors to extend their bodies and imagination to look into the past and ponder about the present.

The Global Geoparks Network and the 169 UNESCO Global Geoparks share the UNWTO decision to designate World Tourism Day 2021 as a day to focus on Tourism for Inclusive Growth. The 169 UNESCO Global Geoparks in 44 Countries, hosting geological landscapes, geosites and landforms of international significance, are protecting and promoting geological heritage attractions as key elements for sustainable tourism development!

For a succesive second year, the Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest opens its doors and hosts the Petrified Forest MTB Adventure for 1 hour and 30 minutes!

Who can endure? XCO for the strong, the brave, the visionaries, the hobbyists, the explorers who love MTB and want to reach the end!

Sports Activities

The Lesvos Runners Association organizes on 25 & 26 September 2021 a relay race around Lesvos. This is a non-competitive running event in which routes with a length of 7 to 17 km will cover a total route of 330 km, which is the perimeter of the island.

The daily routes to Nissiopi will be continued for some more weeks. The weather conditions are now ideal for a visit to the marine and land part of Nissiopi. Do not miss this one of a kind activity, organised by the Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest.

The Unesco evaluators were impressed by the Lesvos Petrified Forest, the southern, eastern and western Lesvos. The five-day evaluation of the Lesvos Geopark began on Saturday, September 10th with a presentation and detailed briefing by Prof. Nikos Zouros, Director of the Natural Museum History of the Lesvos Petrified Forestand and the Museum executives for the progress made by Geopark the last 5 years.

Lesvos will welcome the UNESCO Committee of Geoparks Experts from 10 to 15 September 2021, who will evaluate the Lesvos Geopark in order to maintain the recognition as a "UNESCO Global Geopark". This extremely important distinction is valid for four years. All Global Geoparks participate in the evaluation process, which is under the supervision of UNESCO.
