Το Μουσείο Φυσικής Ιστορίας Απολιθωμένου Δάσους Λέσβου μέχρι σήμερα έχει διανύσει μια επιτυχημένη διαδρομή 25 ετών κατά τη διάρκεια της οποίας δημιούργησε ένα εξειδικευμένο Εργαστήριο Συντήρησης Απολιθωμάτων με εξοπλισμό και έμπειρα στελέχη που συμβάλλει καθοριστικά στην προστασία και ανάδειξη του Απολιθωμένου Δάσους το οποίο αποτελεί ένα μοναδικό σε παγκόσμια κλίμακα διατηρητέο μνημείο της φύσης.

Treasures of the Lesvos Petrified Forest

Let’s discover the Bali-Alonia Petrified Forest! The Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest invites you at a scientific excursion at the Bali-Alonia Petrified Fores on Saturday 9th October 2021 at 11.30. The excursion initially includes scientific presentation at the resting site next to the entrance of the Park and then a tour and acquaintance with the impressive fossil bearing sites.

Το Μουσείο Φυσικής Ιστορίας Απολιθωμένου Δάσους Λέσβου υλοποιεί δράση ενημέρωσης και προβολής της φυσικής κληρονομιάς της Λήμνου, που αφορά την ανάδειξη των γεωλογικών μνημείων, των τοπίων και θέσεων οικολογικού ενδιαφέροντος, με στόχο την αξιοποίησή τους για την ανάπτυξη εναλλακτικών μορφών τουρισμού.

Geosites of Lesvos

The Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest is launching a new initiative this summer as part of its campaign to inform locals and visitors about the recognition of Lesvos as an UNESCO Global Geopark. Utilizing the internet and social networks, it launches the digital presentation of the Geosites of Lesvos that are well-known, but also unknown to the majority, elements of the landscape of the island.

Learn about the treasures of the Aegean

Angiosperms-Dicotyledons

The angiosperms include many plant families. The most common one in the Petrified Forest are the laurels (Lauraceae) and the beech (Fragaceae) which belong to the dicotyledons. Many types of laurels and cinnamon belong to the laurel family, while species of oak, chestnut and beech belong to the beech family.

The collection includes impressive silicate minerals in a wide variety of forms such as quartz, prasiolite, amethyst, rock crystal, smoky quartz, chalcedony, rose quartz.

The museum has a rich collection of minerals and rocks from Greece and abroad, which is constantly enriched.

Fossilized Plants of Greece

The collection includes plant fossils from fossil-bearing sites from all over Greece that belong to a wide variety of plants and provide us with a picture of vegetation and climate change through various time periods over the last 30 million years.

Underwater finds

The collection includes the fossils that came to light from the systematic research of the Museum in the sea area of Western Lesvos, which began in 2001. They are impressive fossilized tree trunks that belong mainly to conifers, found at a depth of 4-5 m.
