Training Programs

The KEK NHMLPF, initially certified only for the sector of the Environment, began operation in 2003 with its first training program.

8 September - 25 November 2003
"Promotion of protected regions and preservation of fossils - Technical palaeontological excavations and conservation, with emphasis on the Petrified Forest of Lesvos"
Duration 400 hours
Financing by the Program EMPLOYMENT of Ministry of Employment within the 3rd European Framework Program.
Throughout the duration of the program, 18 unemployed youth were trained in research issues regarding the detection, promotion, protection and preservation of fossils as well as in techniques for geological and palaeontological excavations. Particular attention was given to the management and protection of the Petrified Forest of Lesvos, a unique monument of nature, and to the areas where the practical exercise of the program occurred. The trainees were also acquainted with the natural geological monuments of the Aegean (caverns, geomorphologic structures, volcanic structures, etc) and the sustainable development that occurs in the region through their promotion. During the training program, participants visited the protected regions of Lesvos and were informed about their management and protection measures.

"Forest Ecosystems: Management - Protection – Reforestation"
Duration 400 hours
Financing by the Region of the Northern Aegean within the 3rd European Framework Program/PEP of the N. Aegean.
The program’s 22 young participants learned about forest ecosystems and the benefits of their perpetuation, their rational and sustainable management, their protection, but also about the financing framework for owners of forestlands and farmers.

2 February - 28 March 2004
"Techniques for the protection of excavations and preservation of fossils, with emphasis on the Petrified Forest of Lesvos"
Duration 400 hours
Financing by the Region of the Northern Aegean within the 3rd European Framework Program/PEP of the N. Aegean.
In this program, the 22 young participants were trained in the detection, preservation, protection and promotion of fossils, as well as in geological and palaeonotological excavations. Participants were also familiarized with the modern techniques that are used by the Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest for the preservation and promotion of fossils in the wider region of the Petrified Forest.

17 July - 17 September 2004
"Management and promotion of protected and ecologically sensitive regions, with emphasis on the Petrified Forest of Lesvos"
Duration 400 hours
Financing by the Region of the Northern Aegean within the 3rd European Framework Program/PEP of the N. Aegean.
Twenty two participants were trained in issues concerning the promotion of protected regions of western Lesvos, the Gulf of Kalloni and the Gulf of Gera, and regions included in the Natura 2000 Network.
