Educational visits and field work

Detail – University students during an educational visit to the Plaka ParkThe Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest promotes and strengthens the realisation of educational activities of university students from Greece and abroad in the area of Petrified Forest.

The objective is the acquaintance of students with the Petrified Forest, its geological structure, volcanic activity, the geomorphology and the natural history of Lesvos, the geological and natural monuments of the island, the ecosystems and the protected regions as well as the Museum’s efforts for the development of geotourism in Lesvos.

The educational visits and field work in the Petrified Forest include:

  • Guided tour in regions of interest in the Petrified Forest.
  • Specialized educational presentation by the scientific personnel of the Museum on the Petrified Forest and the visit objective.
  • Briefing on the permanent exhibitions.
  • Visit to the conservation laboratories.
  • Use of the stereoscopes and the rest of the Museum’s equipment.

Program of Summer Practicums

The Museum collaborates with the universities in carrying out student practicum programs.
The Museum accepts students of Science, Environmental, Social and Economic Faculties,higher education institutions and departments of Conservation, Librarianship and Archivism, Photography, Museology, Cultural Technology and Management,

who wish to do their practicum in one of the following sectors:

1. Documentation of Collections and Geotopes
2. Organisation of exhibitions and events
3. Mapping - Excavation - Conservation of fossils
4. Promotion and utilization of natural monuments
5. Management of protected areas
6. Briefing and sensitization of the public
7. Protection and guarding of fossil bearing places
8. Carrying out research using visitor questionnaires
9. Participation in environmental education programs
10. Recording of natural resources in the Parks

Duration: up to 3 months
Employment: 5 days per week with full or partial employment

 Practicum Application

Volunteerism

The Museum, in collaboration with the Friends of the Petrified Forest Association, organises voluntary work programs in the following sectors:

1. Documentation of Collections (expertise: Geology - Paleontology)
2. Realisation of scientific research
3. Participation in environmental education programs
4. Library (expertise: Librarianship- Archivism),
5. Office of Communication and Press - Publicity
6. Reception of Public-Museum shop
7. Guarding of exhibitions
8. Organisation of exhibitions and events
9. Protection and guarding of fossil bearing locations

We invite those are interested in contributing to the Museum’s work as volunteers and who fulfill the qualification requirements for each sector, to send an application and a curriculum vitae to the Educational Programs Office (Ms Maria Koulouri, Tel. 22510-47033, email: lesvospf@otenet.gr)

The particular time period, dates and hours of employment are decided together with the volunteers.

The Museum provides accommodation for the volunteers.
After the completion of the program, the Museum grants a certificate of voluntary work.
