The coffee-table book "European Geoparks", a luxurious four-color 166-pages English edition of 2009, is the first book that refers to the principles and organization of the European Geoparks Network and its members.

The book guides its reader, through impressive photographs and specially edited text, to 32 Geoparks located in 13 European countries, their geotouristic and educational activities. It presents, for the first time, all the significant natural and geological monuments of Europe, thus allowing readers to browse through the geological time and get to know the geological evolution of Europe.

The Petrified Forest of Lesvos
The coffee-table book "Petrified Forest of Lesvos" is a luxurious four-color edition of 160 pages. Its detailed pages present the story of the Lesvos Petrified Forest, its creation, the process of fossilization, the plant species that have been until now identified, the elements that confirm the uniqueness of the monument, the importance of the excavations conducted during the recent few years in Lesvos, the possibilities for the visitor of the monument and the efforts for promotion of the Petrified Forest, from the mid-19th century, when the first plant species was identified, until the establishment and operation of the Natural History Museum, in 1995. The book presents the most important fossils from the open-air visiting parks of the Petrified Forest and exhibits of the Natural History Museum.

The texts in the book are written by E. Velitzelos, Professor of Palaeobotany in the University of Athens, and N. Zouros, Assoc. Professor of Geography in the University of the Aegean and Director of the Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest. The impressive photographic material in the book is developed by D. Talianis and V. Tsonis. It is available in three languages: English, German and Greek.

The Petrified Forest of Lesvos

This coffee-table book, published in 2000 and available only in English, presents, in 145 pages, the story of the Lesvos Petrified Forest, its creation, the process of fossilization, the plant species that have been identified, the elements that show the uniqueness of the monument, opportunities for the visitor of the monument and the efforts to protect the monument, from the mid-19th century, when the first plant species was identified, until the establishment of the Natural History Museum, in 1995.

It includes impressive photographs, by Dimitris Talianis and his partner Vasilis Tsonis, of the most important fossils from the open-air visiting parks of the Petrified Forest and impressive exhibits of the Natural History Museum. The book closes with stunning images from the marine part of the Petrified Forest.

Detail – The Olive Tree in Greece 

The Olive in Greece

The 156-pages, hardcover coffee-table book entitled "The Olive in Greece" is published by Topio publications, in collaboration with the Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest. The introductory text, titled "The time of the olive", authored by Panos Theodoridis, describes, in a unique way, the special character of this beloved tree and its products. This introductory text is accompanied by photographs of paintings by important Greek painters, such as Theophilos, S. Anastasellis, C. Bokoras, O. Kanellis, N. Eleftheriadis.

The 125 colour photographs in this album are taken by Dimitris Talianis, who manages to deliver, in the best possible way, both the beauty and unique character of this beloved tree, as seen in various parts of Greece, and the different stages of the olive tree cultivation, harvesting and processing of its fruits. Special emphasis was given to the presentation of striking landscapes of the Lesvos grove, whereas photographs of fossilized olive leaves of 60.000 years are also included in the book. The impressive photographs are accompanied by 35 texts, authored by famous philosophers, poets and writers, such as Aristotle, Nikos Kazantzakis, Georgios Seferis, Stratis Myrivilis, I.M. Panagiotopoulos. The book is available both in English and Greek.

A 20 million-year-old subtropical forest

This book contains detailed text and photographs that describe the most important plant fossils identified in the Lesvos Petrified Forest until now. Including also descriptions of these plants’ modern relatives, the book helps the reader imagine the dense subtropical forest that was covering the Aegean area 20 million years ago. A short story of the evolution of plants on our planet is also given, whereas, in response to the finding of a large elephant-like animal fossil in the Lesvos Petrified Forest, a short story of the presence of elephant-like animals in Greece through the past 20 million years is closing the book.

This book explains in great detail the creation of the Lesvos Petrified Forest, the process of fossilisation of the trees of the dense subtropical forest that flourished in the north Aegean area 20 million years ago. It includes information and impressive photographs of volcanic monuments on Lesvos, but also in the whole Aegean area, owing their existence to the past volcanic activity. It closes with details on the recent volcanic activity and the active volcanoes in the Aegean area.
